Ruby’s Corner: October Corner Chords – John Prine
I first met John Prine in 2011 on Cayamo music cruise, somewhere out in The Caribbean. He performed songs on the moving water that moved the waters within me. His name I had known for ages, but to meet this gentle soul in person is something I still smile about years later. He was discovered by Kris Kristofferson somewhere between the late 1960s and early 1970s, after returning from serving in the U.S. armed forces. He was a part of the Chicago folk revival and, by far, the most recognizable figure therein.
A prolific songwriter, he has penned hits for many other artists. Remember “Angel from Montgomery” that Bonnie Raitt sang the tar out of? Well, that’s all John.
On Tuesday, October 14, a little dream of mine comes true on the Ryman stage in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Prine has asked me to join him on “Angel from Montgomery,” and he and his wife have invited me to perform some of my own songs in a benefit for Thistle Farms (His wonderful wife, Fiona, is directly linked to this great organization). The incomparable Iris DeMent will complete our bill, and this will be a night to remember not only because music will be the catalyst, but because love will be the vehicle.
